Art & Mental Health

Street Art Initiative works closely within the art and mental health world and we believe they can work in synergy to bring about positivity.

Art Therapy

What is it?

Art therapy can be defined as 'an application of the visual arts in a therapeutic context'. Art therapy doesn't necessarily mean you have to sit down with a professional, it could be something as simple as journalling, drawing, painting, sketching. The only thing that matters is if you, the artist, are comfortable with it.

Who should try it?

Anyone who is feeling overwhelmed or pressured by the hectic world we live in should try art therapy. Creating art will give you a chance to slow down and explore any issues you may be having. Art therapy improves the mental health of people who are dealing with addictions, anxiety, attention disorders, grief and loss, dementia, depression, eating disorders, physical illness, PTSD, trauma, relationship issues and much more.

The focus of art therapy is on the process not the final product therefore allowing the person to find meaning and purpose.

The benefits

Art Therapy can be used to aid traditional mental health treatment. The purpose of it is to manage and process feelings, stress, anxiety and boost self esteem.

Creating art can bring forward thoughts that may have been in the back of your mind and you can then process them in a healthy way.

The process of producing something you are proud of and have put time and effort into is very rewarding. This then causes a self esteem boost.

Emotional release is also a bi product of producing art, allowing you to have an outlet for expressing and letting go of fears and feelings.

How can I get involved?

Head down to your local art shop and grab some basic supplies! It doesn't take much to start discovering the benefits art therapy could have on your life.

Our Artists

At Street Art we go that extra step further, we not only encourage our artists to express themselves through their artwork we also allow them to monetise their work. Our artists don't have the stress or pressures of trying to market and sell their work. We handle everything from storing, insuring and photographing the piece to fulfilling the sale and making sure their customers are happy.
